Some characters in the 7 bit alphabet as specified by GSM 03.38, used by Esendex, are classed as multi byte.
The alphabet is described here http://www.dreamfabric.com/sms/default_alphabet.html. Those characters with a HEX value of 0x1B are extensions to the standard GSM alphabet and as such require more than one character.
including: line break, ^, {, }, \, [, ~, ], | and €
Using these characters in messages submitted via our API can result in messages being submitted accidentally with more 160 characters and hence becoming multipart ( spanning 1 or more SMS messages )
Our WebSMS solution does however provide a character count which accurately reflects the number of characters used.
